OPERATION URGENT CARE

Now is the time to turn the heat up and put  pressure on the House Members to vote against government takeover of health care.  Tea Party Patriots has an action plan laid out for the next one and a half weeks. Our plan of action is called “Tea Party Patriots Operation Urgent Care”.  Here is an outline of what we are planning:

March 9 – 18 - Continue local rallies at district offices and concentrate your visits during morning and evening drive times for maximum visibility
March 9 – 18 – Phone Calls and emails to Congressional offices
March 9 – 18 – Make appointment to visit your Congressman/Congresswoman in person

March 9 – 18 - Call your Governor’s Office and ask them to put pressure on the State House Delegation to vote against the healthcare bill.

There has been a recent movement in the last 24 hours from Yes to Undecided and toward NO.  What that means is our efforts are having an effect.  Please keep up the good work.  We cannot let up now.  The current vote count at this writing is:
192 Y /190 N / 49 Undecided
Pelosi needs 216 votes for passage
She is 24 votes short.
We added 8 NO votes in the last 24 hours
We need to make sure she does not get those votes.

Health Care Plan for Week of March 8, 2010

We are focusing on the Blue Dogs and Pro Life Dems, many of which supported the Stupak amendment in November.

Continue local rallies at district offices concentrate your visits during morning and evening drive times for maximum visibility.
1. For those that attend, one by one enter the office and ask to speak with the representative about your opposition to health care.
2. If they are not there, speak to the local staffer, and ask to make an appointment to speak with the representative when they are next in their district.
3. Note the staffers response to your request and contact the media/write letters to the editor/blog/tweet about your treatment if they refuse to make an appointment or are rude.
4. As one visitor leaves the next one should enter to repeat the process.
During this hour, ask those at home or work to call or fax the office. Make sure to continue to call and fax the targeted Representatives at their local offices during the day as well as calling their DC offices.

March 12-15

During this time many House Members will be returning to their districts.  Sometime this week call and make an appointment to see your Congressman when they return.  Attempt to fill their calendar while they are home.  Go to the appointment, if the Congressman meets with you, make the most of this opportunity. If they do not, or cancel your appointment make sure that gets out to the press and blogs, and write a letter to the editor/blog/tweet about it  Note your treatment by the staffers and report bad treatment to the press.

If your Representative is not at their office, go to them wherever they are in the district.  Find out their schedule and take the rally to the Representative at the events they are attending.  If you cannot find out this info, stage a WHERE IS MY REP?” rally at the local media outlets.  By locating your rally outside (on public property) of major media locations you increase the likelihood of coverage. Newspapers, and TV stations are great as they have photographers/camera crews just inside that they can send out for pictures.  Local radio stations may send out  a reporter with a live mic.
On Monday the 15th we are calling for a day of prayer.  In this time of great peril for our nation, many have asked that we take a moment to remember that the natural rights for which we are fighting are a gift of our Creator.  This could take the form of private prayer,or a moment of silence or personal contemplation, or if your group prefers, a candle light vigil.  If you decide for a vigil, again hold it for maxium visibility outside district offices or media outlets during evening news hours.

TUESDAY MARCH 16 OPERATION URGENT CARE: THE PEOPLE’S SURGE TO D.C.
As the vote becomes imminent we are asking for a SURGE TO D.C.  This is not a rally or a march.  The goal is to take the constituent visits to the Representatives D.C. offices.  The goal is to fill the halls of the office buildings with citizens waiting to see their Reps and express their opposition to the health care bill.
We realize at this time of economic strife the cost of a trip is beyond the reach of many patriots; so if you can not go to D.C, please call or visit the local offices. WE CAN KILL THIS BILL IN THE HOUSE.  Especially needed in D.C. are patriots from the targeted Reps districts.

The surge is scheduled for the 16th but the vote may not be until later in the week.  We will need a patriots present in DC to visit their Reps and be present on the Hill through from the 16th until they hold the vote, or adjourn for break.  If you cannot attend on the 16th feel free to come and visit your Rep in D.C.anytime between now and the vote if you are able.  If you go, attempt to get a meeting, and wait all day if necessary to get it.  Be peaceful and respectful, but firm. Make sure the staff know you are a constituent, and you wish to have your voice heard on your opposition to the health care bill.
During this time IT IS VITAL that we continue to pressure the local offices as well.  The events in D.C. are an EXTENSION of our local efforts not in place of them.  All local activities need to continue in order to keep the bill from passing.

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator George LeMieux (R-FL) today spoke on the Senate Floor in opposition to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-NV) new health care bill, which was unveiled over the weekend. The measure cuts even more from Medicare for seniors than the previous version and adds additional taxes.
“This bill still cuts Medicare for seniors, it still raises taxes, and it still does nothing to lower the costs of health insurance. In fact, for many Americans, it will result in health care cost increases,” said LeMieux. “Why do we need to rush this bill through before Christmas, before we have had a chance to read it and amend it and improve it? The issue of providing affordable access to health care is too important and too big an issue to move hastily. In its current form, this is not a good bill for America.”
During his floor speech, Senator LeMieux offered an amendment to extend to the state of Florida the same benefit that will provide 100 percent federal funding to the state of Nebraska for the expanded Medicaid program mandated by this bill. Senator LeMieux’s amendment to give Florida the same treatment as Nebraska was objected to by the Democrats.
BACKGROUND:
The 2,733 page Reid Amendment was unveiled Saturday, December 19, 2009. The Senate is expected to vote on the health care bill possibly as early as Christmas Eve, December 24, 2009. The bill:
Cuts Medicare: $470.7 billion
Increases Taxes: $518.5 billion
Overall Cost:
o The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) says the gross cost of the insurance coverage expansion is $23 billion higher under the manager’s amendment.
o Federal revenues (mainly because of the payroll tax) increase by about $26 billion.
o All told, the amendment reduces the deficit an additional $2 billion (from $130 billion to $132 billion).
o The $132 billion in deficit reduction is less than the $156 billion deficit for October. In other words, any possible savings over 10 years of this bill are already erased by the deficit spending in the last month alone.
o CBO said that the range of uncertainty for their estimate outside the 10-year budget window is “quite wide” and “subject to substantial uncertainty.”
The federal cost curve still goes UP:
“Under the legislation, federal outlays for health care would increase during the 2010–2019 period, as would the federal budgetary commitment to health care. The net increase would be about $200 billion over that 10-year period.”
Coverage:
· There is a slight increase in coverage, with 23 million left uninsured as opposed to 24 million in the base bill.
Premiums: Despite the fact that Democrats have said that changes in the manager’s package would improve the delivery system, CBO said that it is likely the amendment would have little impact on premiums.

Unfunded Mandates: State spending on Medicaid and SCHIP would increase by about $26 billion over the 10 year budget window (up from $23 billion in the earlier bill). Only one state, Nebraska, was given relief from this unfunded mandate.

WASHINGTON — Public disapproval of President Barack Obama’s handling of health care has leaped to 52 percent, according to Associated Press-GfK poll that underscores the country’s glowering mood just as the White House revs up its pitch for an overhaul.

Just 42 percent approve of the president’s work on the high-profile health issue. The survey was released Wednesday hours before his nationally televised effort to persuade Congress and voters to back his drive to reshape the nation’s $2.5 trillion-a-year medical system.

Spotlighting how Obama lost ground this summer, his latest approval figures on health were essentially reversed since July, when 50 percent approved of his health effort and just 43 percent disapproved.

The poll illustrates how difficult recent weeks have been for a president who, besides tackling health care, has been battling to end a devastatingly deep recession. Fifty percent approve and 49 percent disapprove of the overall job he is doing as president, compared to July, when those approving his performance clearly outnumbered those who were unhappy with it, 55 percent to 42 percent.

The slipping figures were an ominous sign for Obama, who by year’s end wants Congress to send him legislation lowering health costs while covering millions of uninsured Americans. Besides near unanimous opposition from Republicans, the president’s proposal has divided lawmakers from his own party, with liberals battling for a far-reaching plan that would include optional government-run insurance, and moderates demanding a scaled-down version without public coverage.

The poll found that discontent with Obama’s health care effort is not isolated to Republicans. While nearly nine in 10 from the GOP disapproved of his handling of the issue, so did about six in 10 independents and two in 10 Democrats.

“How in the world can anybody look at this and evaluate it and see if it makes effective change?” Kelly Hoots, 35, a pharmacist and independent from Weaverville, N.C., said of the health care legislation. “Who knows what’s in it?”

He told Americans, in excerpts released by the White House, that nothing he is proposing will force businesses or consumers to change their existing insurance coverage. That much is true.

It’s also true that nothing in his plan guarantees that policies people have now will continue to be available in the same form. In earlier accounts, he spoke with unmerited certainty in saying people who are happy with their current insurance can simply keep it.

AARP is sensitive to the issue because polls show that Medicare beneficiaries are worried their health care program will be cut to subsidize coverage for the uninsured.

At the town hall in Portsmouth, N.H., Obama said, “We have the AARP onboard because they know this is a good deal for our seniors.” He added, “AARP would not be endorsing a bill if it was undermining Medicare.”

But Tom Nelson, AARP’s chief operating officer, said, “Indications that we have endorsed any of the major health care reform bills currently under consideration in Congress are inaccurate.”

Like Obama, AARP wants action this year to cover the uninsured and restrain health care costs, but the organization has refrained from endorsing legislation. Nelson said AARP would not endorse a bill that reduces Medicare benefits.

A spokesman said the Medicare cuts that have been proposed so far would not affect benefits.

Obama assailed “wild misrepresentations” of his health care plan Tuesday during the town hall, taking on the role of fact-checker-in-chief for his top domestic priority. It’s a strategy he will employ at two more town halls this week in Montana and Colorado, and on the White House Web site.

To that end, the Obama-aligned Democratic National Committee is running health care overhaul ads nationally on cable channels and in spots the president will visit, joining a chorus of ads that has become a cacophony over a problem that has vexed Washington for decades.

On the other side, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce was joining the fray Wednesday, beginning to air 30-second spots in about 20 states criticizing the Democratic proposal to offer optional government health coverage, according to R. Bruce Josten, executive vice president of the nation’s largest business group.

The multimillion-dollar buy would be one of the largest so far critical of Obama’s effort, in a year in which opponents have been heavily outspent by supporters of the president’s plan. The spot, showing a balloon being inflated until it bursts, says: “Big tax increases, huge deficits, expanded government control of health care. Call Congress.”

In Portsmouth, Obama faced a polite crowd of 1,800 packed into a high school auditorium and a nationwide audience watching on cable television. He urged them not to listen to those who seek to “scare and mislead” on his plans to overhaul the nation’s health care system.

“Where we do disagree, let’s disagree over things that are real, not these wild misrepresentations that bear no resemblance to anything that’s actually been proposed,” he said. “Because the way politics works sometimes is that people who want to keep things the way they are will try to scare the heck out of folks, and they’ll create boogeymen out there.”

The boogeymen have prompted the White House to strike back. The president ticked off the highest-profile, most emotional issues that critics have used to greatest advantage to interrupt town hall meetings held by lawmakers home for the August congressional recess.

For instance, Obama said the Democratic health care legislation would not create “death panels” to deny care to frail seniors — or “basically pull the plug on grandma because we decided that it’s too expensive to let her live anymore,” as the president put it. The provision he said had led to such talk would only authorize Medicare to pay doctors for counseling patients about end-of-life care if they want it, he contended.

He also disputed accusations that he seeks a federally run system, or one in which the government makes decisions about care.

Obama’s new message, sharpened amid sliding public support for him and his plan, targeted a vital and, polls show, particularly skeptical audience: the tens of millions of people who already have health insurance and aren’t yet convinced of a need to spend billions of dollars to change it or cover the nearly 50 million people who lack coverage.

That message is finding reinforcements online. The White House launched a Web site to counter critics and asked supporters to share with them e-mails they say misrepresent Obama’s positions. It’s a tactic similar to the one the tech-savvy Obama campaign used to win the White House.

The Campaign for Responsible Health Reform came up with a list of sample questions to ask HHS. CRHR suggests phrasing these in your own way:

  • How does the legislation bring down health care costs while at the same time promise no limits on care and artificially capped premiums? It doesn’t add up, and the Congressional Budget Office agrees.
  • How is it possible for government-run health care to be sustainably funded and not reliant on taxpayer money when it’s a proven fact that other — and smaller-scale — government-run health programs like Medicare and Medicaid soon will run out of cash?
  • How will it be possible to choose a private health insurance plan if more people jump to a less expensive government-run health plan? Won’t that cause my premiums to rise — or even put my health plan out of business?
  • What guarantees are there that my health care options won’t be determined by bureaucrats instead of my doctor?
