The Media Burning of Mitt Romney
Written By: Bill Colley
As a libertarian-conservative Mitt Romney’s faith is of no concern. What concerns many of my fellow right leaning Americans is Romney’s lack of commitment to any political philosophy. When as a young college student 30 years ago I read Merle Miller’s oral biography (and no jokes about Miller, please, a stellar journalist) of Lyndon Johnson I kept seeing the word “pragmatist” describing the lanky Texan. Pragmatism didn’t save Johnson in his hours of political need. A President Romney wouldn’t face the same troubles as Johnson but there are certainly a new set of dire challenges. At least Romney’s commitment to his religious faith is a positive.
Romney is a Mormon. His faith arose in the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York about the same time some of my Irish ancestors arrived in the same place to dig the Erie Canal. Palmyra is just a short drive from where I lived and worked most of my first 4 and one half decades of life. It’s a nice place. All the Mormons I’ve known are nice people but for one I met on a blind date some years ago. I’m sure she had the same reaction!
This isn’t to say many of us in older Christian denominations openly accept members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints as Christians. Does it really matter? As a Roman Catholic many of my Protestant brothers and sisters have issues with my faith. We joke about it over breakfast at the local diner. They also think all the Mormons they know are really very nice people. I know so little about the faith I can’t offer any expert testimony. What I do know is Mitt Romney isn’t a drunk and he’s been in love with just one girl and they’ve been in love for decades. I’ve also read the memories of some of Governor Romney’s former coworkers and they vouch for his pleasant demeanor and loyalty.
During the early stages of the Republican Primaries some conservative Christian pastors were asked about Romney’s faith. They offered their own definitions of Christianity and then said they would choose Romney over President Obama. These clergymen were quickly denounced by mainstream media as bigots. I’ve written previously about media hypocrisy on this matter. The members of mainstream media call conservative Christians mean-spirited in between performances of the Book of Mormon on Broadway. A play which the liberals in media (for all purposes all of mainstream media) fawned over when it debuted and a play which not only knocks Mormons but all faith. This from the media mob which then pressed conservative Republicans to denounce their own pastors and their own churches. Do you see a motive?
Romney this week during a campaign event faced an inquisitor demanding to know if Romney disapproved of interracial marriage. Apparently there was a time when Romney’s church had strictures about race mixing and at ages 8, 12 and 16 Mitt Romney didn’t lead an insurrection. Five hundred years ago some members of my church burned heretics and 500 years ago some Protestants burned Catholics. I was unaware as I had algebra homework that night. Give me a break! The late and liberal author, William Manchester, cautioned against judging people from other eras by our mores (I also read Manchester when young). Some years into our near future I fully suspect some will be asking why modern liberals were so hot for killing little babies in the shelters of their mommy’s wombs.
Yesterday as Romney’s Primary hat trick approached I suggested during my humble radio show the mainstream media would soon supplant conservative Christian pastors in dissecting Romney’s faith. Bingo! This morning I checked the website of Real Clear Politics and found this: http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2012/04/04/lawrence_odonnell_mormonism_is_an_invented_religion.html
Lawrence O’Donnell isn’t shy about calling himself a socialist. He’s angry his God, President Obama, has been called a secularist. The same Obama claiming to have spent every Sunday for two decades listening to the racist spittle of the emotionally crippled Jeremiah Wright.
You see the effort, right? Conservative Christian candidates failing to embrace Romney’s faith are driven off and called haters. Then the Obama White House gets the opponent it wants. Now the Mormon faith is again under attack but from Obama and his soulless drones in media. The President is collecting on the sale of the souls of most members of mainstream journalism. The jackal Lawrence O’Donnell will be well rewarded in hell. Or so he believes.
And it isn’t just Romney. South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, often mentioned as a Vice Presidential candidate, was confronted this week on the View by Barbara Walters and Macbeth’s other witches. Why is South Carolina still flying the Confederate flag? Shoot, as if Walters and Joy Behar had any respect for the United States flag!
It’s going to get rough. Are you ready for battle with the underworld?
