An Egyptian court has ordered the Saturday editions of a newspaper confiscated over allegations that it insulted Islamist president Mohammed Morsi and instigated sectarian discord, Egypt’s official news agency said.

Editions of Al-Dustour, a privately owned daily, were seized after several individuals filed lawsuits accusing it of “fueling sedition” and “harming the president through phrases and wording punishable by law,” MENA reported.

It was not clear whether the paper was barred from publishing completely, but the Egyptian newspaper al-Masry al-Youm said authorities have removed al-Dustour from newsstands.

Owned by a Christian businessman, the paper has been fiercely critical of Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood while showing strong support for the military council, which took power after the ouster of Hosni Mubarak in last year’s uprising.

The first leader in Egypt’s history to win a democratic election is a study in contrasts: a strict Islamist educated in southern California, who vowed to stand for women’s rights yet argued for banning them from the presidency.

Mohamed Morsi, 60, was declared president Sunday after he took 52% of the vote to 48% for former Hosni Mubarak official Ahmed Shafik.

During the historic campaign for president, Morsi said he would support democracy, women’s rights and peaceful relations with Israel if he won.

But has also argued called Israeli leaders “vampires” and “killers.” One analyst describes him as an “icon” of those seeking an “extreme agenda.”

Egyptians await word of new president, brace for violence

After a historic revolution that toppled a 30-year regime, Egyptians eagerly waited Sunday to learn who would be the country’s first democratically elected president.

But officials braced for violence and the Muslim Brotherhood said it would stage a long-term protest if a former prime minister is declared the winner.

Egypt is set to announce the winner at 3 p.m. (9 a.m. ET) Sunday, according to the Supreme Presidential Elections Commission.

But hours before the announcement, former Prime Minister Ahmed Shafik made a bold declaration on his Facebook page: “President Ahmed Shafik, Egypt 2012.”

The claim of victory comes amid heightened concerns that Shafik, who served under ousted leader Hosni Mubarak, would give new life to the old guard and essentially nullify democratic gains won after last year’s Egyptian revolution.

Is Barack Obama the “Enemy from Within”? Yes, Domestically And Globally!

12:57 pm in Cairo, Fox News, Hosni Mubarak, judge and jury, Ken Crow, press secretary, Robert Gibbs, spotlight, The Tea Party, Views, white house press by Ken Crow

Today’s announcement that Hosni Mubarak is now gravely ill and apparently on his death-bed prompted me to remember the events of last year. I remember vividly turning on Fox News around 5:30am, clutching my cup of French vanilla/breakfast blend coffee. I was greeted by an incredible scene– thousands of Egyptians in the streets, rioting/protesting. Four or five hours later, I also recall the White House held a briefing with Robert Gibbs (the then-Press Secretary). I honestly cannot remember which reporter asked him the question, but it went along these lines: Mr. Gibbs, can you tell us who or what group is behind these protest in Cairo? The response was simply, “No.” Next question, please.

Less than two hours later, our fearless leader himself appeared in the White House press room. From the podium, he informed the world that The United States of America supports the students in Cairo. This statement, of course, prompted me to have a wagonload of questions. Who truly is behind this very obviously-orchestrated uprising, since it is on such a large scale? How can this President speak with such conviction, when only hours ago his staff claimed to be in the dark? Why would this President throw a thirty year ally like Mubarak under the proverbial Greyhound Bus, then proceed to back over him?

In hindsight, I truly believe the answer is now sitting in front of us– like the two ton elephant in the room.

First I will just say it, then I will give you what I believe to be irrefutable evidence. You be the Judge and Jury!

President Barack Hussein Obama is a Muslim!

There, I said it. Now I will back it up with the facts to prove it. This can no longer be a matter of conjecture. There simply is too much evidence. On the surface, to be candid, it would not be a big deal that he was a Muslim, if he loved America and her allies. But the evidence shows otherwise. Barack Obama, in my opinion, is an enemy of not just our state, but half (or more) of the world. To make matters worse, he’s using America’s might to further his Anti-Colonialism beliefs.

By stating that America was behind the Egyptian students, Barack Obama in effect, instantly cut the heart out of Hosni Mubarak. Mubarak was the one man who kept the Suez Canal open so that Europe didn’t freeze or starve to death. He kept peace and stability in the Middle East by maintaining a very large military. He kept all the treaties with Israel, and never once did any saber-rattling (at least not that I am aware of). Can the same be said for Those who were really behind those riots/protest that overthrew the Mubarak government? What Obama has done is give one of the most strategically-vital countries in the Middle East to a group of Muslim thugs.

Why would Obama do this? Why would anyone purposely give away Egypt to the Muslim Brotherhood? Remember now, this group is the grandfather to Hamas, Hezbollah and Al Qaeda. These guys support and fund all of those Anti-Israel and Anti-American folks who burn our flag while chanting, ” Death to America”! There isn’t time or space to give all the reasons, but I’ll reference a great book that will provide them for you. I don’t normally plug a book, but this one defines Barack Obama’s thinking quite clearly. Let me assure you, this guy is bad news for America and the rest of the free world. Go out and purchase ” The Roots of Obama’s Rage” by Dr. Dinesh D’Souza.

In the last two years, Lebanon, Tunisia, Libya, Yemen and now Egypt were seized by The Muslim Brotherhood. In every case, Obama stood by and watched. He watched as Syria turned into a burning ash heap. And now of course, we know that our old friend Vladimir from Moscow was involved in that human fiasco. Obama has allowed the maniac in Iran to all but acquire nuclear weapons, while listening to him tell the world what he was going to do with them.

Returning to our shores, let’s now take a look at President Obama’s domestic policy. He has essentially shut down our own ability to pump oil. Again, keep in mind that we have a thousand-year supply. In the middle of a major recession, he didn’t just compound the fuel problem– he more that doubled our prices, further crippling our economy. He allowed our nation to run for nearly four years now without a BUDGET! He gathered the nation’s best economic minds to the White House early in his tenure, then threw all their collective advice out the window. And now we learn that he is pushing to allow the military budget cuts to take hold. Do you have any idea what a 40% cut in our military funding is going to do to America? It’s going to crush our military capabilities, which it now appears is exactly what he wants.

Obama has imposed such stringent regulations on banking in America that he is effectively crushing that industry as well. He has allowed the EPA to attack our farming and ranching industries with a massive club. He has gone after Christianity unmercifully, and has plunged a knife through the heart of the health care industry with his ObamaCare. He has piled trillions upon trillions of dollars worth of debt on our grandchildren’s children.

For me, there is only one explanation for this sort of treatment of our nation and our friends. Every word of the D’Souza book is true. This man does in fact hate America, a basic tenant of his true faith. His minister in Chicago has stated that he knew Barack Obama was a Muslim. Barack Obama is on a quest to harm not just America, but Britain, Israel and all of the descendants of the British Empire. This man must be stopped before it is too late. I truly pray that we are allowed to have elections this November. With the course we’re currently on, I now doubt this will even happen.

Muslim Brotherhood must not control Egypt, warns presidential candidate

As Egyptians wait to vote in the second round of their first truly democratic presidential election, secular candidate Ahmed Shafiq is loudly warning voters that choosing his Muslim Brotherhood rival will plunge Egypt into darkness and spark renewed conflict with Israel.

The Muslim Brotherhood already controls the Egyptian parliament, thanks to a very strong showing in legislative elections in December and January. In last week’s presidential election, Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohammed Mursi took home the lion’s share of the votes with 25 percent. But that wasn’t enough for an outright victory, so a run-off will be held between Mursi and Shafiq, who received 24 percent of the votes, in two weeks.

In a press conference on Sunday, Shafiq cautioned that giving the Brotherhood both the parliament and the presidency will “return Egypt to the dark ages.”

Shafiq insisted that despite its promises to the contrary, the Muslim Brotherhood will oppress Egyptian Christians, will try to impose Shariah Law, and will antagonize Israel by making “Palestine” the central issue for all Egyptians.

Shafiq also said the Muslim Brotherhood would ignore the mounting lawlessness in the Sinai Peninsula, a situation that concerns Israel greatly as regional terror groups like Hizballah, Hamas and Al Qaeda set up base in the area.

“I represent progress and light, they represent backwardness and darkness,” said Shafiq, who himself is a very divisive figure considering his past association with ousted former dictator Hosni Mubarak.

The first, free presidential election in Egypt begins Wednesday.

Twelve candidates are running for the top spot vacated by Hosni Mubarak during last year’s revolution. But none is expected to get an outright majority, and if that proves true, then a runoff will take place next month between the two leading vote-getters.

Many Egyptian voters say they are excited about the polls that the country’s ruling generals promise will be fair.

Egyptian State TV is playing patriotic songs and showing photographs of the revolution to encourage the country’s 51 million voters to take part in the presidential vote.

On their Facebook page, the ruling generals describe the vote as the only way to guarantee Egypt’s future stability and development.

And if that isn’t enough incentive, officials are threatening to fine registered voters $16 if they don’t cast ballots. That’s a significant sum for most Egyptians.

Egypt clerics: Brotherhood candidate promised Shariah law is final goal

Polls opened Tuesday for a second day of voting in Egypt's landmark parliamentary elections, the first since Hosni Mubarak's ouster in a popular uprising earlier this year.

The Muslim Brotherhood’s candidate for Egypt‘s presidency is lobbying hard for support of ultraconservative Muslim clerics, promising them a say over legislation in the future to ensure it is in line with Islamic law, as he tries to rally the divided Islamist vote behind him.

The campaign dealmaking is a sign of how the Brotherhood, which is Egypt’s strongest political movement and presents itself to the public as a moderate force, could be pushed into a more hard-line agenda by competition from the ultraconservatives known as Salafis.

Giving Muslim clerics a direct say over legislation would be unprecedented in Egypt. Specifics of the Brotherhood promise, which Salafi clerics said Wednesday the candidate Khairat el-Shater gave them in a backroom meeting, were not known. But any clerical role would certainly raise a backlash from liberal and moderate Egyptians who already fear Islamists will sharply restrict civil rights as they gain political power after the fall last year of President Hosni Mubarak.

It would also damage the image that the Brotherhood itself promoted for the past year, insisting it does not seek a theocracy in Egypt or to quickly implement Shariah.

El-Shater, a strongman in the Brotherhood, is pushing heavily to prevent a split in the Islamist vote in the May 23-24 vote to elect the first president since Mubarak’s ouster. A single Islamist candidate could enjoy a widespread popular base, since the Brotherhood and Salafis together won more than 70 percent of parliament in elections late last year.

The Brotherhood alone holds nearly half of parliament and, alongside Salafis, dominates a new commission formed to write a new constitution. It is hoping for the presidency to seal its power.

But there are multiple candidates running on their Islamic agenda, dividing the vote and raising a possible window of victory for a non-Islamist figure.

El-Shater faces tough competition from a lawyer-turned-TV preacher, Hazem Abu Ismail, who is the favorite of Salafis. Abu Ismail has become ubiquitous in the campaign, plastering what seems like every other lightpost and wall in Cairo with campaign posters showing his cheerfully smiling face and long, conservative beard. After el-Shater announced his candidacy over the weekend, Abu Ismail rejected pressure to quit the race and many prominent Salafis announced they were sticking with him.

“There is grave fragmentation among ranks of Islamists and its getting worse with strong polarization between the two camps of candidates,” Khaled Said, a Salafi leader, said.

Salafis are the most hard-line of Egypt’s fundamentalists, depicting themselves as the “guardians of Shariah” and touting a strict interpretation of Islamic law similar to Saudi Arabia‘s. Many of them see the Brotherhoodas too willing to compromise on implementing Shariah and despise its political pragmatism.

Leading clerics with their trademark long, bushy beards and robes have become regular guests on TV talk shows and issue fatwas or religious edicts attacking secularists, saying Christians and women can’t run for president, and calling for greater segregation of the sexes.

El-Shater met for four hours Tuesday night with a panel of Salafi scholars and clerics, called the Jurisprudence Commission for Rights and Reform, trying to win their support.

The discussion focused on “the shape of the state and the implementation of Shariah,” the commission said on its Facebook page Wednesday.

Mideast Egypt Muslim Brotherhood

Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhoodwas debating Tuesday whether to field a candidate in upcoming presidential elections, a much-anticipated decision that would signal whether the fundamentalist group intends to escalate or defuse rising tensions with the nation’s other political players.

The Brotherhood has emerged as the most powerful political group since Hosni Mubarak was ousted last year, capturing nearly 50 percent of the seats in Egypt’s first post-uprising parliamentary elections.

It’s growing grip on power has fueled concerns among liberals and secularists about the Brotherhood intentions and whether it aims to govern alone, controlling both the parliament and the presidency.

The Islamist group’s political arm, the Freedom and Justice Party, said on its website that 110 members of the Brotherhood’s senior legislative council were meeting Tuesday to decide on fielding a presidential candidate. A top Brotherhood official, Mohammed el-Beltagy, told Egypt’s Al-Tahrir television late Monday that an internal poll showed a majority of Brotherhood members oppose reversing the group’s earlier pledge not to field a candidate.

According to the Al-Masry Al-Youm daily, two of the top names under consideration are Brotherhood strongman and financier Khayrat el-Shater and parliament speaker Saad el-Katatni, who doesn’t have strong popularity in the streets.

Given the Brotherhood’s skills at rallying voters, a candidate backed by the Brotherhood would stand a strong chance of winning the presidency.

Other Islamist groups, such as the ultraconservative Salafis, have agreed before to support one candidate to prevent the fragmentation of the Islamist vote, according to Yousseri Hamad, a spokesman for the Salafi Al-Nour party.

This week, the Brotherhood and ultraconservative Salafis claimed a firm majority of seats on a panel tasked with writing a new constitution. That gives the Islamist’s a strong hand in writing the new charter, which will determine the balance of power between Egypt’s previously all-powerful president and parliament, and define the country’s future identity, including the role of religion and minority rights.

Two days after the selection of the 100-member constitutional panel, splits have already emerged. More than a dozen mostly liberal and secular-minded members have withdrawn, saying the committee does not reflect the diversity of Egyptian society.

Meanwhile, Egypt’s ruling military council, which took power after Mubarak’s ouster is also meeting with political parties Tuesday, a day after it issued a statement that was seen as a concealed warning to the Brotherhood
